Just something you get to love when you live here. In Europe it’s castles that you look for to get a sense of the past and how the people used to live. Here in Alberta it’s the old farms that give you that sense. The low winter sun adds the special feel of the wide country and cozy remoteness.
There are several theories out there for the classic red colour of the old barns. Ranging from “trying to look like brick”, “signalling the way home” to adding rust or blood to the linseed oil for conservation purposes.
I think it’s for the sheer beauty of it, so that we photographers have a colourful subject that stands out from the greens, yellows and blues in the landscape
